Chapter 3 — The Room That Didn't Exist

Daniel removed the vent cover himself.

Vivian begged him to stop.

He didn't.

As an architectural consultant, Daniel knew the dimensions of his own house. The cavity behind the kitchen should have contained plumbing and ductwork.

Instead, his flashlight revealed a narrow passage.

"Call 911," he told Vivian.

She didn't move.

Daniel turned.

"Call them."

"Please."

He took out his own phone.

That was when Vivian whispered:

"If you call the police, they'll take her."

Daniel stared at her.

"Take who?"

Vivian covered her mouth.

Too late.

Daniel entered the passage.

At the end was a small storage room.

And inside it sat a little girl.

"Nora?"

The child recoiled.

Daniel immediately stopped.

He crouched several feet away.

"I'm Ellie's dad."

Nora stared at him.

Her eyes widened.

"Daddy."

Daniel felt cold.

"No, sweetheart. I don't think—"

"Daddy Daniel."

Behind him, Vivian began sobbing.

Daniel turned.

"What did she just say?"

Vivian didn't answer.

He called emergency services.

The next hour became a blur of police officers, paramedics and questions Daniel could barely process.

Nora was taken for medical evaluation.

Ellie refused to leave Daniel's arms.

Vivian sat alone in the living room.

A detective asked Daniel how long Nora had been inside the house.

"I didn't know she existed."

The sentence sounded impossible even to him.

The detective's expression remained neutral.

"This is your residence?"

"Yes."

"And you never saw her?"

"No."

Daniel looked toward Ellie.

His stomach turned.

What else had he failed to see?

A social worker later approached carrying a clear evidence bag.

Inside was a photograph.

"We found this with Nora's belongings."

Daniel took it.

A younger Vivian was holding a baby.

Beside her stood a man.

Daniel nearly dropped the photograph.

The man looked like him.

Same dark hair.

Same build.

Even the same crooked smile.

On the back, in faded ink, someone had written:

Nora with Aunt Viv and Daddy.

Daniel looked toward his wife.

Vivian closed her eyes.

"Tell me," he said.

She whispered:

"It's not you."

"Then who is it?"

Vivian looked at him.

"My cousin Nathan."

Daniel looked again.

And suddenly the resemblance made sense.

But the relief lasted only seconds.

May you like

Because if Nora's father was someone else, one question remained.

Why had Vivian hidden her?
