Chapter 1 — The Cry From the Kitchen

Daniel Whitmore knew something was wrong the moment he opened the front door.

Normally, his six-year-old daughter Sophie would hear his car in the driveway and race across the house before he could even remove his coat.

That afternoon, nobody came.

The mansion was strangely quiet.

Then Daniel heard a child crying.

Not ordinary frustration.

Not the kind of tears Sophie shed when she scraped her knee or lost a favorite toy.

This sounded frightened.

“Sophie?”

Daniel dropped his briefcase beside the staircase and followed the sound toward the kitchen.

His heartbeat quickened with every step.

When he entered, he froze.

Sophie stood beside the marble island, crying uncontrollably. Her face was red, her cheeks wet with tears, and one hand was raised toward her head as though trying to protect herself.

Behind her stood Victoria.

Daniel’s wife.

The woman he had trusted completely whenever business forced him away from home.

Victoria’s hand had just moved away from Sophie’s hair.

For several seconds, Daniel simply stared.

Then his expression changed.

“What are you doing?”

Victoria spun around.

“Daniel?”

Sophie looked toward him.

Her face immediately crumpled.

“Daddy!”

Daniel rushed across the kitchen.

Sophie ran straight into him.

He dropped to one knee and pulled her into his arms.

She clung to his suit jacket so tightly her small fingers turned white.

“It’s okay,” Daniel whispered. “I’m here.”

Sophie continued sobbing.

Daniel looked over her shoulder at Victoria.

“What happened?”

Victoria crossed her arms.

“She was having another tantrum.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Sophie pressed her face against his chest.

Victoria sighed impatiently.

“She refused to listen. I tried to get her attention.”

Daniel stared at her.

“By grabbing her?”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“You weren’t here.”

Those words hit him harder than he expected.

Daniel had heard them before.

Whenever Sophie became unusually quiet after he returned from a trip, Victoria always explained that the child had been “difficult.”

Daniel believed her.

He told himself parenting was stressful.

He told Sophie to listen to Victoria.

Now his daughter was trembling in his arms.

And for the first time, Daniel wondered how many explanations he had accepted simply because they were convenient.

He gently pulled Sophie back enough to see her face.

“Sweetheart, look at me.”

She tried.

Her breathing was uneven.

“What happened?”

Sophie glanced toward Victoria.

Then immediately looked away.

Daniel noticed.

“You’re not in trouble.”

Sophie whispered:

“She gets mad when you’re gone.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“That is enough.”

Daniel stood instantly, keeping Sophie behind him.

“No.”

Victoria stopped.

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“She gets to finish.”

Sophie grabbed the back of his jacket.

Then she pointed toward the corner of the kitchen.

Daniel followed her finger.

Mounted near the ceiling was a small security camera.

A red light blinked.

Victoria looked up.

Her face changed.

Daniel saw it.

And suddenly he understood something important.

He did not have to choose between Victoria’s explanation and Sophie’s fear.

The camera had been watching the entire time.
