Chapter 2 — What the Camera Recorded

Daniel carried Sophie into the living room.
He sat her on the sofa and wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.
“Stay here with me.”
Sophie nodded.
Victoria followed them.
“You are blowing this completely out of proportion.”
Daniel did not answer.
He opened the home-security application on his phone.
Victoria’s voice became sharper.
“Daniel.”
He continued scrolling.
“What?”
“You really think you need to spy on your own wife?”
Daniel looked up.
“The camera was installed for security.”
“You know what I mean.”
“No.”
His expression was unreadable.
“I’m starting to realize I don’t.”
Victoria looked toward Sophie.
The girl immediately pulled the blanket tighter around herself.
Daniel saw that reaction too.
He selected the kitchen camera.
The footage began.
At first, nothing unusual appeared.
Sophie sat at the kitchen island coloring pictures.
Victoria stood nearby preparing something.
Then Sophie accidentally knocked a small baking tray sideways.
It struck the counter with a loud metallic sound.
Sophie jumped.
Victoria turned sharply.
Even without hearing the audio clearly, Daniel could see her irritation.
He increased the volume.
Victoria’s recorded voice filled the room.
“How many times have I told you to stop touching everything?”
Sophie apologized.
Victoria continued.
Daniel’s face tightened.
The recording showed Sophie becoming increasingly frightened.
Then Victoria reached toward her.
Daniel stopped the video.
The room became silent.
Victoria immediately said:
“You’re seeing five seconds without context.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What context makes a six-year-old look like that?”
“She had been misbehaving all afternoon.”
Daniel resumed the recording.
The footage continued.
Sophie tried to step away.
Victoria grabbed at her again.
Sophie began crying.
Then came a sentence that made Daniel’s expression change completely.
On the recording, Sophie whispered:
“Please don’t tell Daddy I’m bad.”
Daniel froze.
He slowly turned toward his daughter.
Sophie lowered her eyes.
“Why would you think I’d believe you were bad?”
She did not answer.
Victoria tried to speak.
Daniel raised one hand.
“Not yet.”
He crouched beside Sophie.
“Did somebody tell you I’d be angry with you?”
Sophie nodded.
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“Who?”
The girl glanced at Victoria.
That was enough.
Victoria became defensive.
“I told her you’d be disappointed if she continued behaving badly. That is not the same thing.”
Daniel stood.
“She’s six.”
“You say that as if children don’t need rules.”
“Rules are not the problem.”
He pointed toward the phone.
“This is.”
Victoria rolled her eyes.
“You’re going to judge me from one recording?”
Daniel stared at her.
“One?”
Victoria immediately realized her mistake.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“How many times has this happened?”
“I didn’t mean—”
“How many?”
Victoria stopped talking.
Daniel returned to the app.
He changed the date.
The week before.
Another kitchen recording.
Then the hallway.
Then the playroom.
Nothing extreme.
But a pattern was unmistakable.
Sophie’s body language changed whenever Victoria approached.
Her shoulders tightened.
She stopped speaking.
She watched the adult’s face before deciding whether to move.
Daniel felt sick.
He had mistaken obedience for comfort.
He had praised Sophie for being “so mature” while he traveled.
Maybe she had simply learned not to make mistakes when he was gone.
Sophie whispered:
“Daddy?”
Daniel turned.
“Yeah?”
“Are you mad?”
He immediately moved toward her.
“No.”
She looked uncertain.
“Not at me?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
He knelt and pulled her into his arms.
“Never for telling me the truth.”
Over Sophie’s shoulder, he looked at Victoria.
May you like
And the anger in his face was no longer confusion.
It was certainty.
