Chapter 15

The trial began on a rainy Monday morning.

The courthouse was packed. Reporters lined the steps. Cameras flashed.

Harrison, Celestine, and Captain Reeves were brought in under heavy guard. They all looked different. Harrison's expensive suit was gone, replaced by a jail uniform. Celestine's perfect hair was dull. Her makeup was gone. Captain Reeves looked angry. Defeated.

Elodie and I stayed in a private room down the hall. She didn't have to see any of it.

Margaret was the first witness for the prosecution.

She walked to the stand. She looked old. Tired. But her eyes were clear.

She told the court everything.

About Harrison's anger. About the abuse. About the lies she'd told to protect him. About destroying my life.

She cried when she talked about Elodie.

"I failed my granddaughter," she said. "I failed her mother. And I will spend the rest of my life trying to make amends."

The defense attorney tried to attack her credibility. He called her a bitter old woman. He said she was lying to get revenge on her son.

Margaret didn't flinch.

"I have nothing to gain from this," she said. "Except the knowledge that my son will never hurt another child again."

Next was Detective Chen.

She laid out the evidence. The photographs. The medical reports. The bank records. The text messages.

She was calm. Professional. Devastating.

Then Elodie's therapist testified. She told the court about Elodie's trauma. About her fear. About her slow healing.

She played Elodie's pre-recorded statement.

Elodie's small voice filled the courtroom.

"Celestine would yell at me when I spilled things," she said. "Daddy would hit me when I cried. I was always scared. But now my mommy is here. And I'm not scared anymore."

There wasn't a dry eye in the courtroom.

I watched from the back of the room. I held Elodie's pre-recorded words close to my heart.

The defense didn't have much. They tried to say the evidence was planted. They tried to say I was manipulating Elodie.

But no one believed them.

The trial lasted two weeks.

At the end, the jury deliberated for four hours.

When they came back, the courtroom was silent.

The foreman stood up.

"On the count of child abuse, we find the defendant, Harrison Mercer, guilty."

The courtroom erupted.

"On the count of conspiracy, guilty."

"On the count of bribery, guilty."

Harrison showed no emotion. He just stared straight ahead.

They turned to Celestine.

"On the count of child endangerment, guilty."

"On the count of conspiracy, guilty."

Celestine started crying. She looked at Harrison like he'd betrayed her.

Captain Reeves was found guilty on all counts too.

The judge sentenced them all.

Harrison: 25 years to life.

Celestine: 15 years.

Captain Reeves: 20 years.

It was over.

I walked out of the courtroom. The sun was shining. The rain had stopped.

Detective Chen was waiting for me. She hugged me.

"You did it," she said.

"We did it," I said.

Margaret joined us. She was crying.

"It's really over," she said.

I looked at the private room where Elodie was waiting. Playing with a toy Detective Chen had given her.

"Not quite," I said. "There's one more thing I need to do."

I walked down the hall. I opened the door.

Elodie looked up. She smiled when she saw me.

"Mommy!" she said. She ran to me.

I picked her up. I held her tight.

"Can we go home now?" she asked.

I kissed her forehead.

"Yes, baby," I said. "We can go home."

And for the first time in my life, I knew exactly what home meant.

It wasn't a house. It wasn't a place.

It was this little girl in my arms.
