Chapter 20

Five years later.

Elodie was nine years old. She was confident. Smart. Kind. She loved school. She loved her little brother. She loved life.

Liam was five. He was energetic. Curious. Always getting into things. He adored his big sister.

Tom and I were still happy. Still in love. We'd built a life together. A good life.

Margaret was seventy-two now. She was slowing down. But she was still the heart of our family. She baked cookies. She told stories. She loved her grandchildren more than anything.

Detective Chen had been promoted. She was now a captain. She still visited us every few months. She was Liam's godmother.

We were a family.

Today was a special day.

We were going back to the town where it all had happened. For the dedication of a new children's center.

Margaret had donated most of her fortune to build it. It was named after Elodie.

The Elodie Vale Center for Children.

It was a place for kids who'd been through trauma. Kids who needed help. Kids who needed to feel safe.

Therapy rooms. Play areas. Support groups. A safe place for children to heal.

We arrived at the center. It was beautiful. Bright colors. Big windows. Playgrounds.

Elodie was nervous. She was going to speak at the dedication.

"You don't have to do this if you don't want to," I told her.

She shook her head.

"I want to," she said. "I want to help other kids who feel scared. Like I used to."

I hugged her. I was so proud of her.

The dedication ceremony was packed. Reporters. Community leaders. Families.

Detective Chen was there. She'd driven up for the occasion.

Margaret sat in the front row, next to Tom and Liam.

Elodie and I stood backstage.

"You ready?" I asked her.

She took a deep breath. She nodded.

"I'm ready."

She walked out onto the stage. The crowd applauded.

She stood in front of the microphone. She looked small up there. But she stood tall.

"Hi," she said. Her voice was clear. Strong.

"My name is Elodie. And this center is named after me."

The crowd smiled.

"A long time ago, when I was little, I was scared all the time," she said. "I didn't feel safe. I thought I had to be perfect all the time. I thought if I made a mistake, bad things would happen."

She paused. She looked at me. I gave her an encouraging smile.

"But then my mom came," she said. "And she saved me. And my grandma Margaret helped. And Detective Sarah helped. And now I have a daddy and a little brother. And I feel safe all the time."

Tears filled my eyes.

"I know there are other kids who feel scared like I did," Elodie said. "I want them to know that it gets better. That there are people who will help them. That they deserve to feel safe and loved."

She looked out at the crowd.

"This center is for them," she said. "So they can heal. So they can be happy. So they can know that they're not alone."

She smiled.

"Thank you."

The crowd erupted in applause. People were crying. People were cheering.

Elodie walked off the stage. She ran to me. I hugged her tight.

"I'm so proud of you," I whispered.

Margaret joined us. She hugged Elodie.

"You were amazing," she said.

Tom picked up Liam. Liam clapped his hands.

"Yay, Elodie!" he said.

Detective Chen came over. She hugged Elodie.

"You did good, kid," she said.

We spent the rest of the day at the center. We met families. We saw the rooms. We watched kids play.

Elodie was in her element. She played with the younger kids. She told them stories. She made them laugh.

She was healing. And she was helping others heal too.

That evening, we went to the cliff where it had all begun. Where I'd first seen Elodie at the wedding. Where I'd followed Celestine. Where my life had changed forever.

The sun was setting. The ocean was calm.

We stood together. Me, Tom, Elodie, Liam, Margaret, and Detective Chen.

Elodie held my hand. Liam held my other hand. Tom put his arm around my waist. Margaret stood on my other side. Detective Chen stood next to Margaret.

We were a family. Not by blood. Not by birth. But by choice. By love. By survival.

Elodie looked up at me.

"Mommy?" she said.

"Yes, baby?"

"Are you happy?"

I looked at my family. At the sunset. At the ocean.

I thought about everything I'd been through. The pain. The loss. The fear.

And I thought about everything I had now. The love. The joy. The peace.

I smiled.

"I'm the happiest I've ever been," I said.

Elodie smiled back. She squeezed my hand.

"Me too," she said.

We stood there for a long time. Watching the sunset. Holding each other.

The past was behind us. The scars would always be there. But they were just scars. Reminders of how strong we were.

The future was ahead of us. Bright. Beautiful. Full of promise.

And we were going to face it together.

As a family.

May you like

Safe. Loved. Strong.

Finally home.
