Chapter 12 - BRUNO COMES HOME

Avery repaired Bruno.
Not restored.
Important difference.
The burned fabric remained visible.
She inserted a conservation layer beneath the damaged side.
Replaced only stuffing too charred to keep safely.
Reattached the original button eye.
The left arm remained darker.
One side smelled faintly of smoke.
She asked:
“Do you want deodorization treatment repeated?”
I asked Milo.
He smelled the bear.
Wrinkled his nose.
“Fire.”
“Yes.”
“Can stay.”
“Sure?”
“Grandpa bear got hurt.”
I swallowed.
“Yes.”
Milo hugged Bruno.
Not cautiously.
Immediately.
The repaired seam had no hidden key.
He noticed.
“Where key?”
“With lawyers.”
He frowned.
“Key jail?”
“Something like that.”
“Bad key?”
“No.”
“Then why jail?”
Four-year-olds remain undefeated by legal process.
“It’s being kept safe while grown-ups figure out what happened.”
He looked at Bruno.
“Grandpa said don't lose.”
“You didn't.”
“Fire almost.”
“You tried to get him.”
He nodded.
I touched his shoulder.
“You never reach into fire for a toy. Even Bruno.”
His face changed.
“Grandpa said never lose.”
There.
A dead man’s sentence had almost sent my son into flames.
Important.
I corrected it.
“Grandpa meant take care of him. He did not mean hurt yourself.”
“How know?”
Because I am your father.
Not enough.
“Because Grandpa loved you more than a bear.”
Milo thought.
Then:
“Even key?”
“Yes.”
That answer became central to his therapy.
Objects do not outrank bodies.
Instructions do not outrank safety.
May you like
Even instructions from people we love.
Especially dead people who cannot clarify themselves.
