Chapter 26 - WHAT ANTON COULD NOT ORDER ANYMORE

The jury convicted Constance of the principal child-endangerment/reckless-conduct offense arising from throwing Bruno into the active fireplace in front of Milo.

They also convicted on the limited unauthorized-signature/fraudulent-directive count supported by the foundation document.

They did not convict on a broader theory that she specifically intended physical injury to Milo.

Correct.

She wanted the bear destroyed.

She created an obvious risk.

That did not prove she wanted her grandnephew burned.

The minor property count involving Bruno merged or resolved with restitution depending on the final judgment.

Sentence:

A short custodial term measured in months, partly suspended.

Probation.

No unsupervised contact with Milo during supervision.

Individual therapy.

No role involving child discipline or youth programming at family organizations.

Restitution for Milo’s evaluation and Bruno’s conservation.

Financial penalty tied to the authenticated foundation-document offense.

No confiscation.

No loss of her private home.

No loss of jewelry.

No family exile enforced by force.

The foundation had already removed her through its own governance.

My assault diversion concluded later.

Anger-management.

Restitution.

No new offense.

Dismissal under program terms.

I had once wanted the family to declare Constance dead to us.

Not literally.

Socially.

No invitations.

No photographs.

No calls.

No name.

Dr. Ellis asked:

“Does Milo need that?”

I answered:

“I do.”

“Different question.”

Again.

Infuriating.

Milo did not see Constance during probation.

No need.

Later decisions could be later.

He knew:

Constance threw Bruno into the fire.

She was not allowed around him right now.

Grandpa had hidden a key.

The key opened papers.

Adults had lied about some of Grandpa’s wishes.

That was enough for five.

The council changed.

Not dissolved by decree.

Rebuilt.

We stopped calling it the Caradonna Council.

Family forum.

Terrible name.

My cousin Claudia suggested it precisely because nobody could sound intimidating saying:

“The forum has spoken.”

Voluntary.

No patriarch.

No posthumous orders.

If someone quoted Anton, they needed an actual source or they said:

“I think Anton would have…”

Difference.

Huge.

Children did not attend business discussions.

Reasonable.

Children also did not need to perform adulthood at family dinners.

Milo brought Bruno.

Nobody objected.

The old north cabinet became part of the formal family archive.

Not open public access.

Private family records remained private.

Copies of Anton’s final governance documents went to relevant adults.

His personal letters went to addressees.

No memoir publication.

No media sale.

His final vulnerability did not belong to strangers simply because Constance had misused it.

The most difficult choice involved the recordings.

Some relatives wanted every tape shared.

“Truth.”

I said no.

Truth has scope.

Anton talking about his pain medication, fears, private arguments, and dying body did not become communal property because three clips mattered legally.

The archive created a review protocol.

Individual letters to individuals.

Governance statements to family.

Medical material sealed.

Private emotional recordings restricted.

No new gatekeeper with unlimited discretion.

Three-person archive committee plus outside counsel.

I did not chair it.

That surprised everyone.

Including me.

Then Bruno.

Avery offered a final conservation mount.

Display case.

Climate control.

No.

Milo slept with him.

A burned stuffed bear does not need museum lighting because adults discovered a key inside.

My father had tried to use a child’s toy to preserve freedom from authority.

Turning it into a relic would have recreated the problem.

Bruno went back to bed.

Where bears belong.
