Chapter 23 - MILO TELLS THEM ABOUT GRANDPA

The trial began ten months after the gala.

Milo was five.

He testified through child-sensitive video procedure.

Brief.

No courtroom audience.

The prosecutor asked:

“Do you know Bruno?”

Milo held the repaired bear in another room? The court did not need the object in his hands while testifying. He answered:

“Yes.”

“Who gave you Bruno?”

“Grandpa.”

“What did Grandpa say?”

“Never lose him.”

“Where was Bruno at dinner?”

“My lap.”

“What did Constance do?”

“Take.”

“Then?”

“Fire.”

“Did you try to get him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you touch the fire?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Daddy got me.”

“Were you hurt?”

“No.”

“Scared?”

“Yes.”

Then defense.

“Did Constance push you?”

“No.”

“Hit you?”

“No.”

“Did she tell you to put your hands in the fire?”

Milo looked offended.

“No.”

“Did she know you would reach?”

“I don’t know.”

Good.

No child mind-reading.

“Did Grandpa tell you there was a key inside Bruno?”

“No.”

“What did he say?”

“Don’t lose.”

Then the attorney asked:

“Do you think Constance wanted you hurt?”

Milo frowned.

The judge intervened.

He did not need to answer motive.

Correct.

Milo left.

No grand speech.

May you like

No child choosing sides.

He asked for crackers afterward.
