Chapter 6 - THE FIRST FALSE ORDER

Not every instruction Constance relayed was false.

That became important.

Some people wanted the story cleaner.

It was not.

Anton did ask:

Limit visitors after chemotherapy.

Keep Milo away during one respiratory infection.

Cancel one council dinner.

Move one meeting.

Ask Lorenzo not to bring certain business disputes into the house.

Constance conveyed those accurately.

Then the boundary changed.

Anton began refusing to make minor family decisions.

Constance kept asking.

“What about Thanksgiving seating?”

“I don't care.”

“Should Lorenzo continue Thursday review?”

“He can decide.”

“What about the council?”

“Let them manage themselves.”

She heard uncertainty as weakness.

Then she filled the space.

A typed directive from eight months before his death said:

PATRIARCHAL COUNCIL PROTOCOL TO REMAIN IN FORCE.

Signed:

Anton Caradonna.

My father’s signature appeared at the bottom.

Outside counsel reviewed it.

The signature was applied using a digital signature image Anton had authorized Constance to use for routine family correspondence during treatment.

Was that itself fraud?

Not automatically.

Scope mattered.

Anton had authorized:

Thank-you notes.

Scheduling letters.

Nonbinding family notices.

Not governance directives.

The archive contained an email from his attorney:

Anton does not want signature image used on any directive, council instruction, property document, medical consent, or statement of preference.

Dated three days before the council protocol.

Constance received it.

Then used the signature anyway.

That was more serious.

Still:

No inheritance transfer.

No asset theft.

A typed family directive with a copied signature.

Its legal force was limited.

Its social force was enormous.

May you like

Everyone obeyed.

Including me.
